This is 2 updates in a row that I will be fishing with the effects of a cold front. We faced NW winds most of the morning. At one point I had to put on my Simms rain jacket to beat the chill after doing some wading. We fished the Scottsmoor area today. We did not have a lot of bug problems with the temperature stuck around 63 degrees.
We tried hard to sight fish for Redfish at first by hugging the west shoreline in the lee. We saw many tailing Catfish when the sun did shine on us, but no Redfish. My friends that accompanied me tried the outer edge of the flats and did have a small school of reds swim by them but did not impress them with their offering. I believe that they were on the trail of a mullet school.
We did manage to catch quite a few small Seatrout just where the flat dropped into slightly deeper water. I am not sure how many, if any, were in the slot. It was an easy way to break the ice. Always remember to bend down the bard on your hooks when the wind is up. It is good for the fish and you or your friends if a cast goes astray.
The fly of choice was a baitfish color EP fly with a purple head on a 2/0 SC 15 hook. The fly was around 4 inches long with a nice sized set of eyes Gooped on. It is a very durable fly and only need a little primping after each Trout release.
We left for home at 1:30 PM. The weather was warming and looking good. I was ready for some lunch and wanted some time to get home before the Florida game. The reason that I fished the area swam by me about 30 minutes before I left…a 4 foot long Redfish, within 15 feet, with a bright bronze tint. I had a good cast on him but he zigged when I zagged. The big guys can be caught on fly but just not this day.
