Mosquito Lagoon Update September 30, 2009

by Cas Summers on October 1, 2009

WOW! That’s all that came to mind when I opened the garage door to drive to meet a friend at Parish Park. The temperature read 63 degrees. We knew that a front had made its way to Florida and were hoping that the Redfish would take it as a sign to begin feeding. The weather was beautiful with an overcast sky most of the day.

Again we made an effort to find the larger Reds that were schooled up? We searched the Indian River for a couple hours in the AM. We did not find them again but did catch some smaller Trout as we cast the flats edges as baitfish schools nervously passed. Visibility was not perfect; as overcast frontal clouds limited the visibility of the Sun.

I knew I forgot something important when I left home this morning. It was my Flip Video Camera. I also overlooked bring along any Tarpon flies along. As we passed through the Haulover Canal we witnessed 20 to 80 pound Tarpon smashing schools of glass minnows and mullet as the East to West current pushed them in the canal. We cast at them for a while but did not hook any as they mauling baitfish. It was entertaining anyway, and would have nice to be able to share a photo of the event.

We did catch Redfish today. We also had a few refusals and lost fish due to quick sets and unbuttoned flies. Mosquito_Lagoon_Redfish_09_30_09Most were smaller fish. We found that they were stalking the grassy shorelines searching for fiddler crabs? There were many crabs present. Many fish had their backs out of the water. The fly had to be cast well in front of the fish and had to be presented very slowly. I believe that some of our refusals were due to overly large and colorful flies. So get out your #4’s and make them weedless and muted in color.
