The Backcountry Fly fishers had an unusual club outing last weekend. Usually an outing consists of a group of anglers planning and fishing together in a predetermined venue.
Last weekend, we had an outing with boats in Stuart, Sebastian and the Mosquito Lagoon. So, here is an update of what I know.
Our boat was launched at Haulover Canal. We headed into the IR hoping to find schooled up redfish on the western shore. After a couple hours of searching the flats and seeing some smaller pods of bait and no redfish we decided to fish the east shore.
We found the bait, much cleaner water, Seatrout and even a small redfish. Most of the trout were caught on top water plugs, sorry fly fishermen, but 3 guys in a skiff make you do unconventional stuff. We decided to relocate.
After a trip back thru Haulover we fished a couple flats that had clean water and most that were muddied from mullet schools. We saw some reds that appeared more interested in hanging out versus eating. What we saw all day long was A LOT of water with a few fish mixed in.
Our club friends in Sebastian caught a mixed bag of species including Pinfish, Seatrout, Jack, Bluefish and Red. Most of the places they fished were near the inlet. They saw more fish than they caught and also had a very high water level that reached back into the mangroves.
Our third group of club anglers fished the Ft Pierce area. They fished to noon when the tide and bite went slack. They caught a few Trout, Grouper and Snapper while fishing a few different sandbars. Baitfish pattern flies and a top water plug caught the fish. A lot of the favorite area flats were unfishable due to the water level.
That’s our disjointed club outing for September. Let’s hope that our water level returns to normal and that the Mullet run will bring more predators our way.
