Mosquito Lagoon Trout

There’s Bait in them thar waters! I took the canoe out today and immediately saw more mullet, minnow, etc. than I have seen for many outings. It is good to see that the water levels in the Lagoon look healthy again. I sure hope the fish like all the new water like my St Augustine lawn? Sure it could make our jobs as fishermen a little harder now that more hiding places are available…but it must be good to be a fish.

The water near the shoreline was a bit more stained within he first 30 feet of the waters edge. The grassier areas seemed to filter the sediment better and that is where the water began to clear up. I fished the shoreline first and did not see or spook any redfish and or trout in the earlier part of the morning. I was hoping to see a redfish on patrol looking for a hungover fiddler crab or two.

I got out of the canoe in a really clean patch of water that was loaded with mullet. The mullet was being chased by a hungry critter’s and I was going to help them with the catching part. I cast a black & purple slider early in the morning with no luck. I quickly switched to an olive shrimp fly and had a taker. I had found a school of 15 to 20 inch trout feeding. I also used a chartreuse & white clouser minnow and a tan bendback pattern that produced fish.

I had a few casts at reds on the way back to the launch. I placed a fly just in front of a nice red. The water was slightly stained. The fish followed the fly for about ten feet and I just keep pulling it away. Dumb. It wanted to eat. It gave up trying and swam away. That would have provided me with a trout & red combo for the day. I saw one more fish and was content to go home. Good luck on your next outing.
